Karbach Brewing Co. has launched a limited-time package for its Light Circus Hazy IPA, featuring art by Houston artist April Murphy. The new box art is aimed at promoting the 50th anniversary of the Bayou City Art Festival in early October.

Murphy, who designed the poster for the 2020 Chevron Houston Marathon, said the cover is feel-good art.

"Who doesn’t relate to animals? I use them to convey very human emotions, mostly peaceful ones," she said. "But even difficult subject matter can be told so people absorb it without walls going up. Animals are very disarming: They open people up."

Like previous artwork, Murphy's use of circles appears on the Light Circus box. A holdover from her days as a graphic designer, Murphy says the intent of her dimensional artwork here was playful and meant to be expressive.

"I’ll never forget one patron. She bought a large piece from me. She lost her cat a few weeks later, and she told me that she walked into my painting during that difficult time and it helped her get through the loss. How cool is that?  It tells me that this is really my purpose."

The special edition Light Circus will be around — until it isn't  — following the festival's run from Oct. 8-9 at Sam Houston Park. Proceeds from each purchase will go to the festival, which supports local artists.
