Immersive Gamebox is bringing its Squid Game experience to the Santikos Entertainment location in Cibolo.
A year ago nearly everyone was bingeing the thrilling and action-packed Netflix series, Squid Game. Soon, San Antonio fans of the Emmy-nominated show can experience suspenseful games like "Red Light Green Light" in person, except your life isn't at stake.
I recently tried the 60-minute immersive, digital adventure that will be opening to the public on September 21 at the Santikos Entertainment location in Cibolo. Abby Schwartz, the general manager for the Immersive Gamebox site, participated in the game with me. It felt just as intense as it did in the show, but without the part of dying if you lose.
The game (only for ages 16 and up) requires at least two people to play. It can have up to six. I used the company's cool 3D motion-tracking visor to make my movements while in the box. It also has three walls that are covered in touch screens.
It includes games like Red Light Green light, Marbles and the "Squid Game" itself.
After getting situated, the first game I joined was the "Red Light Green Light." Like the series, everyone begins along the starting line and tries to win by crossing the finish line first. When the creepy animatronic girl with pigtails turns around, that's the green light to move forward and try to reach the red footsteps the game places on the screen. If you move even the slightest, you lose and have to start again.
It was harder than I thought. I kept stumbling and having to start over. It's timed so I eventually finished in the last second. I know it's a simulation but I truly felt some fear from the iconic doll from the series.
Next up was Dalgona, in which you have to cut out the carved symbols on the candy in various shapes – circle, triangle, star or maybe an umbrella – without breaking the delicate dessert. For this part, I'd recommend moving in slow motion. That helped me cut out the shapes with finesse.
Groups of two to six players will navigate challenges inspired by the series.
The Tug of War game was slightly different. Instead of pulling a rope, you must jump to a square on the screen at the perfect time to keep yourself from falling off the cliff. For the Marbles portion, it stayed true to the series where you must try to push out the opponent's marbles.
My favorite was the Glass Bridge game as you have to work with your team in the box to solve puzzles to make it to the other side. I love a good memorization game as you have to remember the animal masks shown on the walls to reach the finish line. Lastly, you play the actual Squid Game where you have to dodge your enemies in the simulation to make it to the end of the course.
A major difference between the show and the game is that there are no winners in the Immersive Gamebox. Schwartz said they try to make it a collaborative experience instead of a competitive one. While the anticipation of wanting to do well stays, you do need to work with your partner in the Gamebox to succeed.
Players will use the company's proprietary motion-sensing technology and touch screens surrounding the interactive digital smart rooms.
"Our goal is to bring people together," Schwartz said. "Working as a team is great for team building and for field trips. We do have a couple of shorter competitive games but everybody is a winner."
The speed of the game made it fun and feel as if I was competing to win the million dollars from the show. Prices range from $5 to $25 as the Gamebox has different length adventures.
While it's just at the Cibolo location, Schwartz said they have plans to open more throughout San Antonio and Central Texas soon. For more information, visit immersivegamebox.com.
