The ASUS ROG Scar 17 is the gamiest of gaming notebooks you can possibly get your hands on. It has RGB almost everywhere, a gorgeous 240Hz 1440p  display but most importantly, it is also one of the most powerful 17-inch notebooks around. This is thanks to its NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti combined with a 12th-Gen Core-i9 12950HX CPU.

You simply don’t get better than this at the moment and its powerhouse internals perfectly complement the device’s fierce external design. Keep in mind that this ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE is the 2022 model so there are a few improvements across the board here compared to last year’s version. For starters, this version comes with the 12th-Gen 12950HX CPU and packs a 17-inch 240Hz 1440p display. You can also get a model with a 360Hz Full HD panel.

You can also kit this model out with up to 64GB of RAM upgrading it from its 32GB base RAM. It also comes with 2 x 2TB PCIe SSDs. That is 4TB of SSD storage, who even needs that? Well, I could use it, to be honest.  It also packs a 90W battery and comes in at 30Kgs.

But before we get to the technical side of things, let’s unbox this ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE. The notebook comes in a big black box with a cool “For Those Who Dare” fabric strap. Don’t be fooled by the box size though. ThisASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE isn’t that big. In fact, ASUS has included a cool ROG backpack in the box alongside the notebook. So you now have a nice place to store this 17-inch gaming notebook when on the go.

The backpack is decorated in ASUS ROG artwork and includes various zippers and storage compartments for all your wires and plugs. It, of course perfectly holds the notebook and has been designed specifically for 17-inch devices.

The notebook is then stored in the second box. Opening up the box, the device is slowly lifted into the air as the ASUS box presents your new baby to you thanks to its arch level on the back. The box also comes with a 340W power supply to charge and power this beastly notebook. This power supply is 340W and that is a hefty power brick but you’ll probably notice that it is actually a lot smaller than many of its counterparts. ASUS says this 340W brick is 30% smaller than other bricks of the same output. It also supports fast charging so you can go from 0 – 50% in just thirty minutes. It also supports 100W USB C charging.

Lastly, you’ll find two swappable notebook back plates that can be used to change the look of the notebook’s lid. These are magnetized and easily clip on and off the ASUS ROG Scar 15. While I am on the topic of swappable faceplates, ASUS also has a free library of 3D printable faceplates users can browse if they want to make their own unique plastic covering.

Lastly, the box also contains paperwork and manuals but you’ll also find a USB that has been designed specifically for certain Republic of Gamers devices. Using this USB called a “Keystone”, you can plug it into certain devices and store your entire customization profile on the device. This includes your mouse DPI, RGB settings and much more. You then simply have to take the Keystone and plug it into another supported Armoury crate port on another RGB device and it will copy your settings across 1 to 1.

This feature is incredibly helpful for those who swap between notebooks, Armoury Crate-supported devices and those who like to have the same setup and settings across everything. Especially if you’re a pro gamer and rely on your settings being finely tuned to certain games and apps.

When it comes to the actual notebook itself, the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE is pretty stylish. It has a lot of finishes that make it stand out and is definitely designed for someone who wants everyone to know he is using a Scar 17. Now when I unboxed the notebook I left out one special little surprise I found inside the box. ASUS has included a UV light in the box and you’re probably wondering why? Trust me, I was lost too. It seems that ASUS has scattered some cool-looking decals and patterns all over this Scar 17 which aren’t visible to the naked eye.

These text accents are found all over the aluminium lid and look pretty awesome when your shine the UV light onto the shell. I love this sort of attention to detail and it is great to see ASUS adding a little bit of extra love here. You’ll also find the ROG logo at the back that lights up.

Inside the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17, the notebook packs a full-sized keyboard with a transparent shell that cuts across about half of the device. It looks nice and you can kinda see inside the notebook at all the little tech and knobs that make this device tick. Sort of reminds me of the old-school Gameboy days (yes, I still own a translucent Gameboy colour).

The notebook also comes with some cool RGB strips in places you wouldn’t expect to find them. All across the front and the sides, there’s a bright RGB strip that glows as you use the notebook. Everything is also fully customizable and you can sync the lighting to your keyboard and other ASUS accessories.

The display is a 17-inch panel. It features adaptive sync and comes in two models. You can either get a 360Hz FHD model or a QHD 240Hz. The display panel is super thin and the bezels are almost non-existent on this notebook. This means this 17-inch device is a lot smaller than most 17 notebooks thanks to its screen real estate.

As for the ports, on the one side, you’ll find the ASUS Keystone port for all you quick and easy customization transfers. On the other side, there are two USB A ports and an audio combo jack. ASUS has also put a load of ports onto the back of the notebook. Here, you’ll find a Thunderbolt 4 port with DisplayPort out, a USB 3.2 Type C port, HDMI 2.1 port out, a 2.5Gb Ethernet port and your power port. It is really nice to have these ports at the back out of sight and out of mind. Especially if you’re charging or perhaps using the HDMI 2.1 port to play 4K 120Hz games on a supported monitor or TV. It is cleaner and ya for neat cable management.

This G733CX is also quite a powerhouse in performance. This is thanks to its RTX 3080 Ti which has a max TGP of 175W. This packs a base of 150W and can be boosted by another 25W thanks to ASUS Dynamic Boost. It also comes with a MUX switch so you can disable all the software limitations on the notebook to really squeeze out all the performance possible. This is the max possible wattage you can get on a gaming notebook and it’s impressive.

So if you’re looking for max performance on an incredible display all packed into a pretty slim and portable notebook, this ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 is for you. It has the latest and greatest tech around so whether you’re watching movies on the display with Dolby Atmos and Vision support or playing games on the 3ms high res panel with the gargantuan RTX 3080 Ti, this notebook will definitely not disappoint.

ASUS has really created a next-level gaming notebook here with the Scar 17. It sets the bar for what is possible when it comes to gaming hardware in a portable device.
