COUNTY JFC: County JFC Group 1 (round 1): Cromane 0-9, Scartaglen 0-12

The Cromane senior footballers began their County Junior Football Championship campaign last Saturday in disappointing fashion after a three-point loss in Scartaglen.

Cromane were ahead for most of the game but when it came to crunch, in the last 5 minutes, it was the home side that got the vital scores.

Cromane led 0-9 to 0-8 when Darren Houlihan swung over his sixth point of the day in the 54th minute. However, that was to be our last score as Scartaglen hit four unanswered points to take the win. Scartaglen’s lead point in the 58th minute was the first time they led during the game.

Cromane will rue coughing up two good goal chances in a first half when they looked in control. We led by 0-5 to 0-2 after 18 minutes after Darren Houlihan converted a 45. This was added to three previous scores from Darren and a nice point from wing back Eanna Healy.

At half time though Scartaglen had battled back to get within one, 0-5 to 0-4.

Cromane again stretched their lead out to three in the first five minutes of the second half thanks to two frees from Darren and Sean O’Sullivan, 0-7 to 0-4. That was as good as it got as the home side finished stronger to take the opening round spoils.

Group 1 of the county junior championship also includes Moyvane and Renard with games to come against both sides in August.

Scorers: Darren Houlihan 0-6 (0-4 frees, 0-1 45), Sean O’Sullivan 0-2 frees, Eanna Healy 0-1.

Team: Danny Healy; Liam Teahan, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Eanna Healy, Brice Dourieu, Cian Lyons; Donnchadh Walsh, Darrwn Houlihan; Shane Ahern, Jason O’Connor, Danny Shea; Darragh McKeefry, Sean O’Sullivan, Mikey Houlihan Subs: Cathal Crosby for S Ahern 40m, Finbar Casey for B Dourieu 45m.

CROMANE LADIES: Congratulations to the Cromane Ladies GFC under-15 team that won the Under-15 All-Ireland 7s in Kilmacud Crokes, Dublin, last Saturday. A mighty achievement.

UNDER-15s: Under-15 Central Region Division 4: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 4-17, Renard/St Mary’s 3-7

The GGC under-15s had a comprehensive win over Renard/St Mary’s in Glenbeigh last Monday evening. The final score was GGC 4-17, Renard/St Mary’s 3-7. Full credit goes to all the players and management for being able to focus last Monday given the excitement of Kerry’s All-Ireland win the day before. This was their second win from their three games in Division 4 of the Central Region so far. UNDER-13s: The GGC under-13s began their Central Region campaign earlier this week. Updates in the weeks ahead.

There will be two teams competing. One will take part in Division 2B with the other taking part in Division 3. The Division 2B opposition is Kerins O’Rahillys/St Pat’s, Blennerville; An Ghaeltacht; Ardfert, and Ballymac. This Sunday they are at home to Ballymac B.

Meanwhile, the Division 3 opposition is Castlegregory; Dromid/Waterville; Kerins O’Rahillys/St Pat’s, Blennerville; and Annascaul/Lios Poil.

Last Tuesday (August 2) they began their Division 3 campaign with a game in Tralee against Kerins O’Rahillys/St Pat’s, Blennerville (report next week). This Sunday they are at home to Castlegregory.

MID KERRY MINORS: The Mid Kerry minors continued their good form in the county championship last week. They won their second Group 2 game last Tuesday week (July 26) when they overcame the challenge of Laune Rangers in Milltown by 1-15 to 0-9.

Cromane were represented by Liam O’Neill, Darragh Crosby, and Jamie Casey. In the previous game, a win over West Kerry (5-10 to 0-8) on July 18, all three in addition to Jack McGrath and Tony Og Duffy were involved.

The Mid Kerry minors completed their group phase of the county championship on Monday evening (August 1) with a game against South Kerry in Cahersiveen.

Well done, great to see five Cromane lads involved. CUL CAMPS: The Kerry GAA Cul Camps took place in Cromane last week and were as successful as ever.

This is always a popular week and it was great to see over 100 children participating and having great craic honing their skills. The atmosphere was magnificent with the children still on a high last Monday morning after Kerry’s mighty All-Ireland win the day before.

Many thanks to Kerry GAA (and to PJ Reidy for his organisation) and to all of the Cul camp coaches (including our own Saoirse Harkin) who helped the players during the week.

IMPORTANT - UNDERAGE TRAINING: Please note our new starting time of 10.30am for our underage training on Sundays. This was decided after a survey of parents and coaches involved. The new time is working well with the most important thing being that the children still come in their droves and enjoy the mornings with their coaches and friends. So, training every Sunday at 10.30am.

FIXTURES: Sunday, August 7 - Central Region Under-13 Division 3 (round 2): GGC v Castlegregory in Cromane at 11.30am. Sunday, August 7 - Central Region Under-13 Division 2B (round 2): GGC v Ballymac B in Cromane at 12.30pm.

Commiserations to Kayleigh Cronin and the Kerry Senior Ladies who were beaten by Meath in the All Ireland Final on Sunday

SENIORS: Our Senior men got their Intermediate Club Championship bid off to a winning start overcoming a lively and gallant Laune Rangers side in splendid sunshine in Beaufort . Although victorious there were still enough wrinkles to iron out in the weeks ahead but as with all Championship an opening day win is imperative.Peter McCarthy got the ball rolling with the opening score and this was shortly followed up by a Jamie O Sullivan free. Fielding a youthful forward line it was then the turn of Will Shine to make his imprint. Good pressure on a short Rangers kick off saw the ball fall to the Kerry U20 and spotting the keeper in an advanced position he coolly lobbed the ball to the net from 35 yards. This served to jolt the Killorglin men into action and John Thyther, Eoghan Hassett and Fiachra Clifford got their names on the scoresheet. Cian Gammell then intercepted another kickout and burst through to score left footed. Ryan O Grady and Jamie O Sullivan from placed balls drove it on with Callum Moriarty replying before Cian Gammell, operating at midfield , used all his speed and power to fist over a fine score. Cian alongside the immense Padraig Lucey were holding court at midfield against a Rangers side missing the injured Peter Crowley. The bright Will Shine had the last word, or two, of the half with a double from play.

Half time score Killarney Legion 1-9 Laune Rangers 0-5.Rangers, always a proud championship club, were not going to go down without a fight and so it proved as Eoghan Hassett(2), Jack O’Connor and Eoin O’Sullivan shot four without reply. James O Donoghue, introduced at half time, stopped the momentum with a pointed free and then Luke O’Donoghue with a massive impact off the bench hit two in a row to open up a six point gap again, 1-12 to 0-9. Fiachra Clifford swung over another for the Rangers before the pivotal moment of the second half arrived. Brian Kelly pulled off a tremendous save but still needed the intervention of Cathal Sheahan( who was outstanding all through) to clear it off line. In the next attack a long searching ball from Padraig Lucey found Ryan O’Grady and he finished to the net with some aplomb. That served to seal the game but credit to the Rangers they balled on through points from Eoghan Hassett and Fiachra Clifford. Luke O’Donoghue struck again, this time off the right, and Will Shine put the gloss on the scoreline with a tremendous point. The Legion spirit was typified near the end with Jonathan Lyne going full length on the boot of a attacker to foil another attack and the final score read 2-14 to 0-14; The next game in the competition is the weekend of August 13/14 where we will face either John Mitchels or Dromid Pearses.Team.. Brian Kelly, Cathal Sheahan, Rob Leen, Peter O Sullivan, Darragh O Doherty, Danny Sheahn, Jonathan Lyne, Padraig Lucey, Cian Gammell(0-2), Peter McCarthy(0-1), Will Shine(1-3), Jamie O Sullivan(0-3), Ryan O Grady(1-1), Thomas Moriarty, Sam Benson.

Subs ..James O Donoghue(0-1) for Sam Benson, Luke O Donoghue(0-3) for Thomas Moriarty, Denis Sheahan for Rob Leen, Conor Keane for Peter McCarthyKERRY

Hard luck to the Ladies who were beaten by All Ireland Champions Meath in last Sunday’s decider. Despite getting off to a dream start the experienced and more physical Meath team eventually wore them down to run out winners. They can feel very proud of their years efforts and getting back into the All Ireland conversation must be their goal for the seasons ahead.ACADEMY Our Saturday Morning Academy has taken a little sojourn for the month of August to give both coaches and participants a chance to recharge their batteries. But fear not we will on the first weekend in September where all boys and girls from age 4-11 will be welcome to enjoy the basics of Gaelic Football in a fun and safe environment.

Once again crowned U21 County Champions the District side had to fight tooth and nail to overcome a determined North Kerry side in Austin Stack Park last Wednesday evening. Peter O Sullivan lined out at corner back for the entire game, the hour plus extra time while Ryan O’Grady leading the attack on the forty kicked three points. Will Shine, a half time substitute, contributed a vital point while Darragh Fleming was introduced midway through the second half. Kieran O Donoghue was also part of the panel which eventually got the better of North Kerry on a 1-11 to 3-14 scoreline.U15 BOYSHard luck to our U15 White team who lost out to Scartaglin in the East Kerry Division 5 Final last evening in Spa. A slow start saw us fall behind early on but the middle 20 minutes of the game saw us dominant and left us only a point in arrears. The last quarter was nip and tuck but Scart slipped in for one last goal to seal the game. Full Time..Killarney Legion 3-14, Scartaglin 5-14.

The very best of luck to our Senior player Jamie O Sullivan and his wife to be Bridie Kennelly as they celebrate their big day this Saturday August 6th. We wish them well both for the day and the future.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Killarney Legion got the better of Laune Rangers in Pete Coughlan Park, Beaufort on Sunday as the experience and strength in depth of the Killarney side proved crucial on a warm afternoon. Legion had the luxury of leaving big players such as James O=92Donoghue and Conor Keane on the bench as Sam Benson started for his Senior debut, whereas the Laune Rangers side -- already without key players including Gearóid Hassett and Dáire Cleary -- had to make do without Peter Crowley who had been named in the team but missed out. He was replaced by Eoghan Hassett who was making his Championship debut, as were Ryan Diggin, Calum Moriarty and Darragh O=92Grady. Legion led by five inside of four minutes as Peter McCarthy and Jamie O’Sullivan (free) points were followed by the Killarney side’s first goal -- an inaccurate short kickout punished by Will Shine who chipped the ball over the retreating Jason Browne into the net. Laune Rangers, indeed, had yet to possess the ball at this point and found themselves with a mountain to climb, but they responded well and got onto the scoreboard with points from John Tyther, Eoghan Hassett and Fiachra Clifford (free), to leave Legion leading by 1-2 to 0-3 with fifteen minutes played. An extended squad member of the successful Kerry team, Cian Gammell was playing well at midfield and added to Legion=92s lead with a well taken point, while Ryan O=92Grady added a pointed free soon after. Calum Moriarty spltt the posts for Rangers, but Legion dominated the remainder of the first half, adding points through Jamie O=92Sullivan (2 frees), Cian Gammell and Will Shine (2) to take a commanding lead, although John Tyther added a pointed free at the other end for the Killorglin men just before the break. Half Time Score:- Killarney Legion 1-9, Laune Rangers 0-5. Laune Rangers were much improved at the beginning of the second half and scored four successive points through Eoghan Hassett (free), Jack O=92Connor, Eoin O’Sullivan and Darragh O=92Grady, although a number of wides as well as two dropping into the hands of the grateful Brian Kelly would prove costly. James O’Donoghue -- introduced at the interval -- scored a pointed free to settle Legion, before another substitute Luke O’Donoghue scored twice in succession to leave Killarney Legion leading by 1-12 to 0-9 with fifteen minutes to play. Fiachra Clifford scored an excellent point as Rangers were looking for a way back into the tie, and their big chance came in the 53rd minute as Jack O’Connor’s shot was saved excellently by Brian Kelly and the rebound that seemed to hang in front of the net for an eternity was eventually cleared. Within 30 seconds of this save, the ball was in the net at the other end -- Ryan O’Grady smashing the ball to the net from a tight angle -- and a six point swing originating from the stop by Brian Kelly took the game out of sight. Fiachra Clifford (2) and Eoghan Hassett added to their own tallies with well taken points for Laune Rangers, although Legion added scores from Luke O=92Donoghue and Will Shine to keep their opponents at bay. Eoin Clifford pointed for Rangers as the Killorglin men kept plugging away, and Brian Kelly was called upon to save once more before the final whistle. Full Time Score:- Killarney Legion 2-14, Laune Rangers 0-14. Championship favourites Legion were impressive on the day and will be favoured to top the group. Laune Rangers will hope to have some of their absentees back to action for Round 2 of the competition on 13th/14th August. Killarney Legion:- Brian Kelly (jt capt), Cathal Sheahan, Rob Leen, Peter O=92Sullivan, Darragh Doherty, Danny Sheahan, Jonathan Lyne, Jamie O=92Sullivan (0-3f), Cian Gammell (0-2), Peter McCarthy (0-1), Will Shine (1-3), Thomas Moriarty, Ryan O=92Grady (1-1, 1f), Padraig Lucey, Sam Benson. Subs: Darragh Fleming for P O=92Sullivan, James O=92Donoghue (jt capt, 0-1f) for Benson, Luke O Donoghue (0-3) for Moriarty, Denis Sheahan for Leen, Conor Keane for McCarthy. Laune Rangers:- Jason Browne, Seán Cleary, Patrick Carey, Ryan Diggin, Eoin Clifford (capt, 0-1), David Mangan, Calum Moriarty (0-1), Eoin O=92Sullivan (0-1), Shane Daly, Stephen Sealy, Fiachra Clifford (0-4, 1f), Jack O=92Connor (0-1), Darragh O=92Grady (0-1), Eoghan Hassett (0-3, 1f), John Tyther (0-2, 1f). Subs: Mark O=92Connor for Tyther, Daniel Macbeth for J O=92Connor, Shane Doona for F Clifford.

SENIOR B: Laune Rangers relinquished the Mid Kerry Junior title on Wednesday evening as they were defeated by a more experienced Milltown/Castlemaine team in JP O=92Sullivan Park. Both teams were missing players, but with Laune Rangers a few days away from Championship action, the home team were without a raft of eligible bodies and fielded a team with no fewer than nine U19s in the starting lineup. The young Laune Rangers side took time to grow into the physicality of the whistle-light game, and found themselves 1-6 to 0-2 behind after fifteen minutes -- O=92Shea brothers Cian (free) and Gavin scoring for Rangers but Milltown blitzed their hosts for the opening quarter with Seán Hogan (0-2), Conor Spillane (1-3), & Kieran McKenna (0-1) getting the scores. John Dennehy (2) and Kieran McKenna pointed for Milltown in the second quarter, but Laune Rangers scored through Cian O=92Shea (free) Callum Russell and Ciarán O=92Sullivan (1-1) to leave four between the sides at the break. Half Time Score:- Laune Rangers B 1-5, Milltown/Castlemaine 1-9. Two pointed frees by Conor Spillane increased Milltown/Castlemaine=92s lead but it was soon halved with the score of the game -- Ciarán O=92Sullivan selling an excellent dummy before finding the bottom corner of the net with a shot from outside the square for his second goal. However, that was as close as Rangers would come on the scoreboard as Conor Spillane (free), Seán Hogan (2), & Brendan Delaney all pointed to extend the lead. Substitute Mike Frank Russell -- fresh from Sunday=92s 1997 celebrations -- added a pointed free late on but Milltown/Castlemaine secured the win. Full Time Score:- Laune Rangers B 2-6, Milltown/Castlemaine 1-15. Laune Rangers B:- Adam Carey, Killian Spillane, Cormac Johnston (capt), Cathal O=92Callaghan, James Treacy, Jonathan Carey, Ciarán O=92Sullivan (2-1), Michael O=92Sullivan, Callum Russell (0-1), Cillian Foley, Marc Clifford, Aona O=92Shea, Eamonn Carey, Gavin O=92Shea (0-1), Cian O=92Shea (0-2f). Subs: Morgan O=92Sullivan for E Carey, Patrick Brennan for O=92Callaghan, Michael F Russell (0-1f), Oisin Flynn for C Russell, Daniel Evans for J Carey.

KERRY: Commiserations to the Kerry Senior LGFA team who were defeated by Meath in the All Ireland Final on Sunday, especially our own squad member Meadhbh Johnston. Laune Rangers had two supporter=92s buses on the road on Sunday, including one made up of our U14 Girls squad who had a highly enjoyable challenge match in the early afternoon against St Peregrines in Dublin.

MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Laune Rangers took the field in the County Minor Championship against a strong Mid Kerry side in Milltown on Tuesday evening. A low scoring first quarter saw Laune Rangers score the first two points of the game through John Burke (free) and Darragh Clifford, but Mid Kerry opened their account with a point -- the shot deflected over the bar by a fine Conor Buckley save. With fifteen minutes on the clock, Laune Rangers led by 0-2 to 0-1. Mid Kerry pointed again to level matters, but John Burke (free) and Niall O=92Brien scored excellent points to restore the two point lead. A Mid Kerry point was quickly cancelled out by a John Burke score from play, but the home side scored three in succession to take a slender lead into the break. Half Time Score:- Mid Kerry 0-6, Laune Rangers 0-5. The stronger Divisional side flew out of the traps after the restart and doubled their lead in the early stages with a point. Pointed frees were exchanged between the sides (John Burke for Rangers) before the hosts struck the net for the game’s only goal and take full control of the tie, following it up with a point to extend their lead to six points. Darragh Clifford scored an excellent point from distance for Rangers, but Mid Kerry pointed twice more to lead by 1-11 to 0-7 with fifteen minutes to play. Darragh Clifford added another excellent point for Laune Rangers but Mid Kerry were still on top, and they added another point that would have been more but for an excellent save by Conor Buckley. The home side added two more points, but the young Rangers side kept plugging away. John Burke scored a well taken point, although Mid Kerry added a final score before the final whistle. Full Time Score:- Mid Kerry 1-15, Laune Rangers 0-9. The strength of the Divisional side proved too much for the young Laune Rangers team, with 13 of the 20 still eligible for Minor next year. Laune Rangers:- Conor Buckley, Tim Mangan, Shane Clifford, Matthew Spillane, Niall T O’Brien (0-1), Oisín Birmingham, John Tuohy, John Burke (capt, 0-5, 3f), Patryk Radny, Rian O’Sullivan, Tom Garry, Eoin O’Connell, Seán Diggin, Darragh Clifford (0-3), Stephen Gannon. Subs used: Ryan Carey for Garry, Gavan Mangan for Tuohy, Devin Hogan for Diggin, Seán O’Donnell for T Mangan, Callum O’Sullivan.

UNDER 13 BOYS BLUE: The Central Region Under 13 competition got underway on Sunday evening and Laune Rangers Blue team opened with an excellent Division 1 win against Austin Stacks in Connolly Park. Laune Rangers had the ideal start, scoring goals through Odhran Foley, Kieran Patton & Callum Robertson and points through Kieran Patton & Hugh O=92Sullivan (free) in the opening quarter. Callum Robertson added another point before Austin Stacks registered their first point. Odhran Foley pointed twice and, although Stacks scored three points of their own, Daragh O=92Sullivan hit the net for Rangers=92 fourth goal before the break. Half Time Score:- Austin Stacks 0-4, Laune Rangers 4-5. Laune Rangers fifth goal came via Conor Murphy in the early stages of the second half and points were added by Mikey Hynes, Kieran Patton and Cormac Sweeney (free). A pointed free by Stacks was nullified by Hugh O=92Sullivan and Stacks added another before Callum Robertson and Odhran Foley added further points for Rangers. Austin Stacks rallied in the final quarter and added six points (2 free) before scoring their first goal to close the gap. Odhran Foley added another point before Stacks struck for their second goal with the final score of the game. Full Time Score:- Austin Stacks 2-12, Laune Rangers Blue 5-12. Laune Rangers Blue:- Luke Carey, Luke McGillicuddy, Pat Costello, Charlie Foley, Donnacha Prendiville, Eugene Mulligan, Fionnán O=92Connor, Mikey Hynes (0-1), Conor Murphy (1-0), Hugh O=92Sullivan (0-2f), Callum Robertson (1-2), Liam O=92Shea, Kieran Patton (1-2), Odhran Foley (1-4), Daragh O=92Sullivan (1-0). UNDER 13 BOYS WHITE: The earlier game of the evening was the Division 1B encounter between Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers White team.
