HOLLIDAYSBURG — Artists dotted various sites in the downtown area Friday evening, painting, photographing and observing each other creating works of art via the plein air style — French for “open air.”
As the light and shadows of everyday places came to life, participants worked to capture the scene using a variety of medium, including watercolors, pencil and ink.
There was no instruction, which allowed all those who attended the chance to create artwork as they saw fit.
Dave Huber of Ebensburg could be found putting paint to paper to catch the light on a garden fountain at a house along Union Street.
“There was sunlight when I started painting, but now there’s more shadow as the sun goes down,” he said as he worked.
Huber said this was his second year participating in the get together, noting it’s nice to have the opportunity to sit outside when the weather is great and to meet other artists.
More accustomed to painting landscapes, Huber said working on the fountain is quite different from “having to focus on more than one subject.”
Cindy Ake Rabold of Altoona was just around the corner, where she was painting a rendition of a flower box.
Rabold often goes on vacations and retreats just to paint, but the Hollidaysburg location was unique.
“Painting in Hollidaysburg has been really interesting because of all the different architecture,” she said, adding there are a lot of homes with gardens that allow for an endless amount of subjects to paint.
“With painting, I enjoy the different colors and textures,” she said.
Denice Rodaniche was sitting with a group of ladies on an outdoor patio where they were capturing the scene and objects around them — Rodaniche, a gate, and her friend, Arlene Lennox, candles.
Lennox and Rodaniche have been to Spain to paint in plein air, and are going to France soon to experience it there as well.
“It’s really nice and relaxing after everything that’s happened over the last few years,” Rodaniche said.
The event was organized by Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, ArtsAltoona and the Hollidaysburg
