WorkshopQ's dustbins, Gargee Designers demin rakhi, Project Mumbai's benches out of waste.
We are constantly advised to recycle, reuse, or upcycle our trash so it doesn't wind up in one of the many overflowing landfills. This is applicable to everyone, not only brands, large corporations, or industrialists. All you need is a creative imagination to begin caring for nature from the comfort of your own home. On World Nature Conservation Day, News9 is highlighting some initiatives that are helping the environment in their own unique manner.
It is that time of the year when you spread love to your siblings and strengthen this priceless bond. And at Gargee Designer's, they wanted to make this year's celebration a little bit more joyous in honour of the auspicious Raksha Bandhan occasion. Hence, they have come up with a distinct idea of spreading joy through organic rakhis. These are made from organic and denim fabric from their apparel line. What else makes this even better? The rakhis are part of the Mood Indigo Collection. They are reasonably priced, washable, and available in light denim and midnight blue denim.
Talking about the initiative, Gargee Designer's creative director, Ravi Gupta, says, "I have always had a propensity for recycling things. At Gargee, we constantly develop new programmes that focus on environmental sustainability. Sometimes our consumers have thanked us for doing this. It has dramatically increased our sales as well."
So, let's sustainably celebrate this Rakshabandhan and make the world a better place!
In an attempt to support Nestle India's initiative- Hilldaari and to develop inclusive and resilient models for solid and plastic waste management in the tourist cities of the country, WorkshopQ designed and fabricated 36 dustbins using recycled plastic. The Hilldaari movement, a CSR initiative by Nestle India implemented by Recity Network Private Limited, is developing different models for Integrated Solid Waste Management in the Hill cities; Mussoorie, Nainital and Dalhousie, by deploying different strategies in line with the city's context.
Waste segregation is the first step toward efficient waste management and by making public dustbins with separate bins for Wet Waste and Dry Waste designed using parabolic inspirations keeping in mind its functional use, they have aided the Hilldaari initiative in their behavioural change to achieve high amounts of segregation in public areas.
The initiative is facilitating the diversion of waste from landfills and is working towards waste worker professionalisation, waste collectors and informal pickers, through a collaborative approach with municipal councils, citizens, contractors, waste workers and influencers. While designing these dustbins, their main criteria were the ability to be resistant to harsh weather and easy maintenance as public property.
The design sense at WorkshopQ is to artfully disguise the evident use of recycled materials perfectly aligned with the beauty of the recycled specks of various plastics in these sheets. A strong metal frame encased around the recycled plastic sheet lends a parabolic curve to them. By optimising the lifespan of plastics by reusing and recycling, they eliminate the need to create new plastic and have successfully diverted 555 kgs of HDPE, LDPE and MLP plastics from the landfills while making these 36 dustbins.
In the effort to create a sustainable city and build environmental awareness through behavioural change, Project Mumbai started the Mumbai Plastic Recyclothon. The initiative focusses on collecting plastic from citizens and recycling it into amenities for the public good. It is innovative, transparent and impactful. Through their social media outreach, they invite citizens to donate plastic at home every month. The drop-off happens at pre-decided and announced locations and the plastic collection takes place the following day. The plastic is then collected, segregated and sent to recycling partners where it is converted into pellets and then recycled into amenities benches, garbage bins, pencil boxes and attire.
The benches are placed in municipal gardens for people to use, some of them, including garbage bins, are gifted to housing societies which donate plastic as a mark of gratitude while pencil boxes are gifted to children motivating them to donate plastic. Every month they collect over one tonne of plastic waste which would have otherwise gone into a landfill. The entire initiative is free and the Plastic Recyclothon started in Mumbai and will soon be launched in Thane and Navi Mumbai too.
